There are a few questions you need to ask yourself when you are going to purchase a new sleeping bag.

  1. Where are you using your sleeping bag?
  2. What type of weather is forecast for your destination?
  3. Will you be sleeping directly on the ground, an air mattress, or a cot?
  4. If it’s a beach trip, will you be using just blankets or other wrappings?

As you can see there are a few things you will need to consider.

Where are you using your sleeping bag

Whether you’re on a beach, in a forest, high in the mountains, or on you friends living room floor, you’ll need a different bag for each of these scenarios.

Weather Forecast

Depending on the weather at your destination, will depend on the type and quality of the sleeping bag you will need to purchase. Most of the sleeping bags on the market today are sold by a temperature range so you will have an idea whether your bag will keep you warm while you are camping. If you are going to be sleeping in a bag alone, trust me you need to get a bag that is rated for 20˚ to 30˚ below what your weather forecast predicts. Even if you are sleeping with someone, you really want to keep this in mind. You have no idea how hard it is to go to sleep when you are freezing. Again, been there, done that.

If you are going to be sleeping with someone make sure your sleeping bags are “zipper compatible”. Almost all sleeping bags can zip into another one of the same brand, but not all, so check it out first.

Ground, mattress or cot

I have always slept on an air mattress, but lots of folks are comfortable sleeping directly on the ground. If you do that, make sure you put either some newspaper of plastic of some kind under your bag. It will help to keep the moisture out. Lots of folks take a cot to sleep on and they are a great idea, but when you are luging a camp site of stuff up a mountain, or thru thick vegetation, a small air mattress takes up a lot less space than a cot. Your choice.

No bag at all

Sometimes you wind up in a scenario where you just need to crash on your friend’s floor. If your still young enough to do this, a few blankets should suffice. I wish I was young enough to do that again, but I’m not. Oh well….. If your planning on a beach night, you should be ok with just a few blankets, but again…your call.

Sorry this is so short, but sleeping bags just aren’t that sexy.
